$ od /var/lib/texmf/ls-R 0000000 000000 000000 000000 000000 000000 000000 000000 000000 * 0000100 000000 000000 000000 000000 0000107 The file -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 666 2007-04-11 09:44 /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXMFMAIN is full of 0s as well $ cat /dev/null > /var/lib/texmf/ls-R $ cat /dev/null > /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXMFMAIN and ran mktexlsr a few times until the error messages about no usable entries in the respective files had gone away.
