The conflict/provides doesn't solve the entire problem. Lots of packages depend on specific versions of libmysqlclient16, eg nagios-plugins-standard. (Although this is the natty version it was just as broken in lucid): Depends: libc6 (>= 2.8), libldap-2.4-2 (>= 2.4.7), libmysqlclient16 (>= 5.1.21-1), libpq5 (>= 8.4~0cvs20090328), libradius1, zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4), snmp, radiusclient1, libnet-snmp-perl, dnsutils, bind9-host | host, smbclient, ucf, nagios-plugins-basic (>= 1.4.5-2)
