Yup, it was missing, and installing it immediately fixed the problem and dramatically solved the situation. Now I have all my former gnome launchers listed.
Looks as if the upgrade 10.10 -> 11.04 would not install all libs needed for unity. the datetime indicator was also missing and needed to be installed manually. Problem of update-manager or dependencies.
