I've noticed it seems to be a problem of focus. I can easily replicate this by using the ctrl-alt-arrow keys to switch to a workspace with eclipse open. I cannot type in eclipse at that point. However, if I hit alt-tab, it focuses on eclipse (open tab highlights) and I can start typing.
