BTW: Is there a best place to install Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) packages of Samba higher than the stable release maintained for Lucid? Perhaps this is fixed by a higher release of Samba. In the past when I started with Samba I was using Debian Sarge. I installed Samba from the official Samba repo. However, I have only used official Ubuntu packages since switching to Ubuntu.
