I have exactly the same problem described above.

Ubuntu 7.04 (final) installed via "Desktop cd" on /dev/hda8
Also tried with "Alternate cd" but computer won't boot. 

My computer don't have a SATA controller.

Procedure for repeating the problem:

1) Power on the computer
2) Supress  the option "splash" from grub (for seeing more informations during 
the boot process)
3) boot
4) after few seconds i can see the following:
