ThinkPad T500, Natty 64bit: I turned off the screensaver entirely & set
the screen to sleep after 5min. Now it doesn't lock up every time, but
still locks up. Often, the screen will wake up & the GUI will all be
frozen.

I just tried the "Alt + SysRq + r + s + e + i + u + b" trick & it
wouldn't reboot. All the steps appeared to work until the "b" for
reboot. Bug 303601 might be relevant here.

I don't have time right now to learn why it didn't reboot for me just
now, but I'll do that next. Also, there's another key combination with
"Alt + PrintScreen + r + e + i + s + u + b", which is the way I always
remember it.
