This appears to also be a problem with non-Atheros cards. Multiple people are reporting problems with the Netgear WG311v3 (a Marvell chipset)- in my case, the v1.38 ndiswrapper that ships with Feisty reports driver installed, but not hardware present; the compiled 1.42 version (last right now) also reports hardware found, but still nothing works: no errors are generated, no crashes, and yet the "wlan0" device is never created or available. This card worked perfectly in Edgy. I'm not sure from the above posts if the patches mentioned would be appropriate for this card, since it is not Atheros and the symptoms seem different.
