Another issue: The best way to switch from a normal window to a maximized one in the background is clicking in the menu bar of the maximized application (it's fast and you don't have the risk of pressing any buttons or links in the maximized window). Whether this works or not heavily depends on how large the menu of the focused application is and if you have thought about the menu at all.
