Public bug reported:

After installing ubuntu 11.04 on my computer with MSI mainboard, Intel
3,2 GHz CPU, 1,5 GB RAM and ATI Radeon X800 Pro AGP 8X graphic card
connected to Samsung SyncMaster 520 TFT screen I recognized problems
with the display such as kind of "snowy" letters and freezing clickboxes
to which You couldn't write any more. After investigating the forums I
successfully managed to handle the problem in two steps:

1. In etc/default/grub add the string ' radeon.modeset=1' - without the ' of
course - (for kernel mode setting ON) after "quiet splash" within the quotes to
the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=..., save, and run 'sudo update-grub'
afterwards.
2. (More important:) In the Login Screen change settings to "ubuntu classic (no
effects)".

After the next boot the screen display worked fine as it did before in
ubuntu 10.10 with the elder radeon driver loaded by announcing it in a
changed xorg.conf file.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
