I assume that Smart Pad refers to Elan Smart-Pad. In my case windows 7 recognizes this as V5.2. I found a related Achlinux bug
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=909394 which forwards to https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27442 and then it gets a bit too cryptic for me. Also I suspect that https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/565543 is related or duplicate even though it is about ALPS touch pads. I have Acer eMachines E642G and same problem. Since I have the Elan Smart-pad I try to run apport-collect against this report.
