I don't have either of the Natty systems that I was using at that time, but I do have a Lubuntu Natty system installed with the stable Natty Alternate i386 CD (I installed a command-line only system and then installed the package lubuntu-desktop) which is somewhat similar to the system on which I first experienced the problem. This system does not have the problem.
