Sorry, I should have requested that this bug be closed.

I used dpkg to remove and purge the python package, then apt-get
installed "ubuntu-desktop" which, aside from losing a very few custom
settings, worked perfectly.

I don't know if that indicates a package corrupted during download, or
if, by doing that, I "round-about" accomplished the same solution you
mention in your comment.

Either way, since I had to get my production server back up and running,
I had to fix it, and there's no way for me to go back and debug now.
