I saw this problem with 11.04.

I checked the md5sum of my .iso, and sure enough, it was bad.

The right md5sum was remarkably hard to find.
http://releases.ubuntu.com/11.04/MD5SUMS
7de611b50c283c1755b4007a4feb0379  ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso

I suggest putting it in small print right below the big orange "download" 
buttons on
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
or at least a link to something like
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
