I modified the description. I hope it helps. Changing preferences in VLC should not crash compiz/unity or vlc.
Ncurses and skins2 is something I remember choosing, to check out the effects. I did not apply ANY downloaded skins--so that shouldn't be an issue. It would be helpful if config and plugins are included in bug report! That did fix vlc, it starts now.
