Last resort, I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 2 LTS and tried to install it. It crashes with the the same error message : "The ext4 file system creation #21 of SCS11(0,0,0)(sda) failed." I don't have much disk space left for more attempts, as each install alongside scoffs 4 to 10 GB of disk.
