I don't use libreoffice, but I imagine that using unoconv is similar to doing export to PDF, which has always "worked". As stated in the original bug report, the problem is when you print (for example print to a cups-pdf PDF virtual printer or to a physical printer).
"Export to PDF" is generally not satisfactory for publication quality figures because it rasterizes certain aspects of the EPS image.
