My computer has been experiencing the same problems... At first it was only with Firefox and Chrome, but the last time it happened was when I was checking my email in Evolution, while updating in the background. Now I can't update because it shut down in the middle of it. I've had Ubuntu since 9.10, and I updated from 10.10 to 11.04, 32 bit Intel.
