Luke, in the end, I tried all of the model options that were listed in
patch_conexant.c. However, I was not as systematic as I should have
been and did not record in detail how each of them performed, partly
because the results were inconsistent and variable. Some options
initially appeared to give me a working microphone, but later failed
after a reboot, or after I ran skype, etc. The symptom that I was
seeing was the failure of the microphone to provide any response on the
vu meter in the sound preferences dialog. I also noticed that alsamixer
did not seem to provide appropriate controls for the microphone, but
this varied depending on the chosen model quirk.

I guess to document this properly I would need try each model quirk in
turn and put it through a standard set of tests. This could take some
time because the two notebooks I am dealing with belong to family
members who live elsewhere, so I don't have continuous access to them.

Thanks, Mal.
