I got the same problem. after upgrade i only got a few icons on the desktop I guess nautilus and the top I got a shadow and a few ghost icons that works but is not visible.
Creating a new user and using that account it all works so it's some configuration issue for my user. tried to remove .gnome* .gconf and so on but nothing I did had any effect. Now I have installed fedora 15 instead so I'm not going to be able to do any testing.
