Same problem with 10.10 and 11.04. Kernel boots but fails (dies) when switching to video.
Blacklisting radeon (/etc/modprobe.d) and disabling fglrx (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) helps to boot the system normally. Video features are poor, compiz / openGL / googleearth fail to work.
