Hi have this exact problem with a Toshiba NB200 Netbook on Ubuntu 11.04 (64 bit) which has the Atheros AR9825 WiFi.
It basically works perfectly within 1-2 meters of the wireless hub but going into another room or a different floor renders the WiFi connection useless. It should be noted that it works perfectly find using exactly the same hardware on WinXP.
