I was running the latest version of LIRC, yes. lirc-modules-source was not installed.
In any case, I found a solution. In /etc/lirc/hardware.conf, change LOAD_MODULES to "false" and reboot. This casued the remote to start working again. However, now every button press for up/down/left/right generated two events in XBMC. The soulution to that was to prevent the ir_rc6_decoder kernel module from being loaded. Seems there's some conflict between some new functionality built in to the kernel.
