To be exact, I wanted to install "samba". I had it installed in 10.10
and the problems arose during the upgrade to 11.04 when it tried
updating samba as well).
Interestingly, maybe I *did* manually install samba4 at some point. I
was working out some issues with getting samba to talk with Windows and
that may have been why.
Therefore, I retract my earlier statement: installing "samba" does
indeed install samba (v3), not samba4. Sorry about that.
At this point I can get samba (v3) or samba4 installed, which is good.
One final question if I may: where does /etc/samba/smb.conf actually
come from? It doesn't appear to be installed or updated with samba (v3)
or samba4.
(And thank you again for pointing me in the right direction!)
