I encountered the same issue on my older Sony Vaio VGNFS195VP after a
fresh installation of Natty Narwhal. For everything I want do on the
Desktop, nautilus pushes the CPU of my laptop to 100% for about 3-5
seconds and stalls the whole system (see picture with system monitor).
Only after these 3-5 seconds of "nautilus thinking" I can perform the
task I wanted to to, be it simply renaming an icon, drawing a selection
over some icons, or even moving a single icon around. This is very
painfull! I am not able to help any further, but maybe it is just a
matter of my old laptops low ressources (Intel Pentium M with 1.60 Mhz,
1 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 6200 Go with 128 MB RAM). Or has it something
to do with the transition from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3? By the way, this
issue happens either with Unity, Unity-2D or the classic environment and
with either the Nvidia driver, the Nouveau 3D accelleration or nothing
of them installed. I hope you can fix this issue for the next release
...
