This happened due to a crash when changing desktop effects through ccsm
which is fixed in the proposed version of unity in natty. For the time
being you could reset unity settings by doing the following
1. log in to Unity session
2. press ctrl+alt+f1
3. login with username and password
4. type 'export DISPLAY=:0'
5. then 'unity --reset'
6. come back to tty 7 with ctrl+alt+f7 if thats not the right tty then try 8 or
9.
This will solve the problem and with the update it may not happen again
so I am closing this bug. if you face it again please re-open this bug
