Affects me too. Asus A6Va-Q016H, internal speakers work fine, when you
plug in the headphones the speakers go silent but the headphones are
silent too.

So from at least Ubuntu 6.06 to Ubuntu 11.04 this has always been a
problem.

"La scheda audio funziona correttamente, tranne l'uscita cuffie. Per
sistemare l'uscita cuffie seguire la guida: HdaIntel, quindi modificare
il file etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base aggiungendo la seguente riga:

options snd-hda-intel model=z71v position_fix=1"
I don't understand Italian, but you just have to add "options snd-hda-intel
model=z71v position_fix=1" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. This works for
me.®
