Same problem, same OS, (2.6.20-15-generic kernel). Slightly different hardware (Dimension 4600), but same graphics. (And same background - I've never seen the boot up display, so I didn't even know it existed!)
I've tried video=i810fb; that solves the 40 columns problem, but means that there is no boot-up feedback at all (not even the reduced colours version).
