Public bug reported:

After a clean install of 7.04, from the Alternate install CD, with most
of the defaults taken, the bootup appears normal until grub begins
loading the OS. Once the splash screen is supposed to appear, the screen
goes completely dark and nothing is seen for a very long time until GDM
starts up. In the event of a slow network startup or other problem, this
gives the impression of a "frozen" machine.

This dell has a Celeron CPU, 512MB of memory, and the bug still occurs
with all the bios defaults reset. It also appears to be independent of
any of the BIOS legacy device settings and/or the video aperture and
default video memory size settings.

A temporary workaround is to edit the grub menu item to remove the
splash screen options.

I believe that this bug may also occur during the bootup of the desktop
cd - where it's more confusing because the process takes so long.
