Do a lspci (in the terminal) and see if you have something like this: 04:09.2 Mass storage controller: Texas Instruments 5-in-1 Multimedia Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/xD) If it's Texas Instruments, it should work. The reason it didn't come through updates? The devs never got around to fixing the bug and it seems they're letting it sit. There's plenty of discussion on this bug of how to fix it, so that file just does what they all said to do without you having to figure out *how* (or download 40mb through which you'd have to sort).
