Some additional information: When I set "model=thinkpad" and rebooted, the microphone seemed to work (level indicator responding in sound preferences), but stopped working as soon as I tried to make a test call in skype. With "model=asus", the microphone did not work at all. I'm happy to try anything else that anyone would like to suggest.
