I can see that you're not running with effects enabled, but FWIW, I experience the same performance problem with gnome-terminal from time to time, but running with Unity enabled (also nvidia drivers). I suspected that the gfx memory was somehow exhausted or not cleaned up properly so I tried switching to a different VT and back (ctrl-alt-f1 and then ctrl- alt-f7), and for me, that fixed the problem. If that's the problem for you, I won'tput my hopes up that it will be fixed anytime soon since we're running the proprietary nvidia drivers :)
