Public bug reported:
The VLC menu's are very disfunctional under Unity. If you start VLC,
then search for mp3 or mpg files to play there usually is no way to get
back to actually viewing the moving you are left at the VLC "list"
screen which displays the list of files to be played but there is no
control or button to return to actually to the VLC screen showing the
movie.
This is very different behavior from VLC on 10.10 Gnome desktop
