This also happens with Debian.
I've seen the slowdown happen with java 6.24, 6.25 and 6.26.  I ended 
installing 6.21 to fix the slowdown problem.
I also understand this happens with OpenOffice when using java 6.24, 6.25 and 
6.26.
Here is how to duplicate the slowdown problem.
You have to open a openoffice or libreoffice database with a certain number of 
records.
I have a database with over 900 records and when scrolling from page to page 
takes at least 12 second or more to go to the next page.  This didn't occur 
with java 6.21.
Some people say 6.22 fixes this problem but some users still have this issue 
even with 6.22
