I'm having the exact same problem (ubi-partman erroring out on /var/lib/partman/outfifo) installing on my eeepc with 11.04 and 11.10. Some potentially useful information: sda has 4 existing partitions, 1 ntfs, 1 swap and 2 linux (boot and root) in that order, and even though the file outfifo does seem to exist, if I keep a shell open in that directory, right around the time the error gets thrown, the shell's link to that directory goes stale... maybe that directory is supposed to be recreated during the whole process, but just thought I'd mention it in case.
