This works well for me and other people, so as you already mentioned the
reason might be that your hardware setup does not have a link beat
('carrier detect'). We need to find a solution for that.

Just to check this theory, can you please do the following:

  - pull out the ethernet cable
  - plug it back in
  - copy&paste the output of "dmesg |grep link" here
