Oh dear, how embarrassing. I've just found out that an encrypted home folder prevents hibernation (or rather wipes it on final shutdown/start up) to maintain high level security protocols. I have since reformatted with Natty but without a encrypted home folder and it seems to hibernate successfully now. Only now it displays a large red square in the top left stating monitor number (ATI Catalyst Control Center).
