Oh dear, how embarrassing.  I've just found out that an encrypted home
folder prevents hibernation (or rather wipes it on final shutdown/start
up) to maintain high level security protocols. I have since reformatted
with Natty but without a encrypted home folder and it seems to hibernate
successfully now. Only now it displays a large red square in the top
left stating monitor number (ATI Catalyst Control Center).

My apologies. Newbie mistake :( Feel free to close this thread.

Many thanks for starting to help me though, Damien. It would have been
very much appreciated had I not been such a [insert insult here].
