I have the same problem with Nokia N900 and USB tethering. Network- manager tries to connect, but always fails. This used to work on Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 without any issues. Apparently many other people are having this issue: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1746061
