This only occurs when you start gvim from a terminal. If you start gvim
from the Unity interface, or from Nautilus, the menu appears correctly.

As stated elsewhere, if you start gvim in the foreground, this doesn't
happen either.

Presume that what is happening is that the unity menu is attempting to
bind to the initially started process, but instead should be binding to
the process that gvim forks when you run it from the terminal.
