No sound.

Worked through it.
Turned out to be default output connector set to headphones rather than speaker 
output.

Ubunutu - System - Preferences - Sound

Look at output tab.
At the bottom there is a drop down for connector: options are headphones or 
analogue output.

Select Analogue Output.
Hey presto.
Knew it would be something simple.
