I'm sorry, this error may have been caused by trying to write to a partition that was too small for the installation. It appears that the 9.04 installation crashed a few years ago when I improperly partitioned the drive. I didn't want to try to repartition & reformat because I had a working copy of WIN XP on the drive with important existing data. Since then I have migrated to new drives and just transferred this drive to retain archives of the old data. Installer saw old 9.04 installation and offered option to upgrade. My mistake. I will make an attempt to install to a new reformatted, properly sized partition, and then update this bug.
