Your behavior B is what you'd expect to see when you get back to the
kernel with the patch applied. I guess we can conclude that at least
sometimes you aren't getting back to the kernel, but we can't really
tell whether behavior B is due to the reset or something else.

Does that machine have a caps lock LED? If it does, and if it's not
already coming on when the machine hangs, I can probably turn it on in
the same place where the reset is now to let us know whether or not it's
ever making it back to the kernel.
