It's all a bit clearer now. The reason my report was so long and unclear
was because I had got bogged down and confused trying to edit a text
file. In fact all I needed to do was to add a couple of lines of the
form "options snd-emu10k1 index=0" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base to get
everything working properly.

The user-friendly way to fix this would be to have a utility in the
Gnome System-->Adminstration submenu to allows you to determine which
sound card is which.
