Additional notes: 1) Tried moving ~/.thunderbird/ and ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/ to force Thunderbird to re-generate these directories and start over with a clean slate. No good. 2) Created a new account on this machine, logged out and logged back into the new account. Thunderbird runs fine.
