I took my ipod to one of the "geniuses" at the Mac store and he reformatted the hard drive.
Using the current stock dapper kernel (linux-image-2.6.15-26-686), I have succesfully used gtkpod to transfer music to the ipod (connected directly to the laptop, no hub). I no longer receive any Buffer I/O errors and everything appears to be working properly.
