I took my ipod to one of the "geniuses" at the Mac store and he
reformatted the hard drive.

Using the current stock dapper kernel (linux-image-2.6.15-26-686), I
have succesfully used gtkpod to transfer music to the ipod (connected
directly to the laptop, no hub). I no longer receive any Buffer I/O
errors and everything appears to be working properly. Up to now, I have
only transfered ~30 songs, so the test is limited, but I believe that in
my case it was the ipod that was the problem.
