Addendum: Since I don't understand what was causing the bug, I don't
think I would tall this a "solution" so much as a "workaround".  I still
do not understand why thunderbird failed to run for LDAP users.  I would
still consider this a serious bug, as many organizations surely rely
upon LDAP for authentication.
