I'm getting this same problem in Ubuntu (as opposed to Xubuntu), if it matters. Enabling auto-login (http://maxolasersquad.blogspot.com/2011/07/how-to-setup-auto-login-in-ubuntu-at.html) seems to be the only work-around to getting logged in.
