I have also tried to reinstall kernel version 10, using the following
commands:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.38-10-generic
sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic
sudo update-grub
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.38-10-generic
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.38-10-generic

After the last command, I can read that the latest headers are already
installed and that kernel and kernel haders vers. 8 are no longer necessary and
can be purged using option autoremove. I didn't do this, because it's the only
version that boots!
I also had a strange message saying that vmlinuz is a faulty link and I might
need to re-run my bootloader grub.
Anyway, no progress...
