Public bug reported:

indicator-power shows battery as if critical. Also, if the battery is
removed the icon is not updated.

Disconnecting the AC adapter cable seems to force the update of the
battery status. I'm going to take a guess and say something like "It
seems it isn't polling the battery but rather only responding to
events".

PS: daily live CD ISO booted from GRUB2.
