I seem to be having a similar problem. This happens only when I'm using fglrx (doesn't happen with radeon [ati] driver). This problem is occuring with newest drivers downloaded from ATI, and also the restricted-modules package.
Kubuntu 7.04 using 2.6.20-15-generic HP nx6125 Laptop Turion64 2GHz ATI xpress 200m (128MB shared, set in BIOS).
